Program: PhD, Interdisciplinary Oncology
Year in program: 4th year
Hometown: Nagano prefecture, Japan

What inspired you to pursue your program?
I was inspired to pursue my PhD in interdisciplinary oncology (IOP) because of the diversity of this program. Students in IOP include those who perform mass data analyses, imaging, wet-lab experiments and so on, and there is always something new for me to learn from others, and many opportunities for collaboration and the exchange of knowledge.

What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?
In the past few years, I have collected interesting data for my thesis project, and now I have a story to tell. I’m very much looking forward to writing my inauguralfirst-author paper this year.

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I was born and raised in Japan, but when I was 16, I decided to leave home and move to Canada by myself to study here.

Best piece of advice:

Whatever you do, there will be times that everything seems to be failing and nothing seems to be moving forward. However, it will all eventually pan out, so make sure to remember your ultimate goal, stick to it and hang in there.

What superpower do you wish you had?
Mind reading.

Where in the world would you like to get lost?
An uninhabited island.
