Revised Clinical Faculty Policy
In May 2025, the Faculty of Medicine approved revisions to the Policy on Clinical Faculty Appointments. These changes will roll out in phases between January 1, 2026 (appointments and reappointments) and July 1, 2026 (promotions).
The updates are designed to:
- clarify policies and processes for appointments
- expand opportunities for promotion
- align rank criteria to more fully recognize the distinctive and significant contributions of clinical faculty
Information Sessions: Learn More About the Changes
The Faculty of Medicine is hosting four one-hour information sessions from mid-October to mid-November 2025. Register for a session at one of the following times:
- Wednesday, October 15, 7– 8 am
- Tuesday, October 21, 4:30–5:30 pm
- Monday, October 27, 12–1 pm
- Thursday, November 13, 5:30–6:30 pm
Each one-hour session will cover:
- an overview of the policy improvements and updated rank criteria
- key steps for reappointment and promotion
- information on the new Faculty-level committee
All clinical faculty are encouraged to attend one session. Each session will cover the same material and provide a question-and-answer opportunity.
A summary of the information session will be posted here after the final session in November 2025.

Appointment Policy and Rank Criteria
Clinical faculty appointments are governed by the Faculty of Medicine Policy on Clinical Faculty Appointments (“Policy”) (Approved May 2, 2025).
Specific criteria and expectations for each rank are listed in Appendix A of the Policy. Examples of academic activities in the Faculty of Medicine that fulfill these criteria are described in the Guide to Academic Activities for Clinical Faculty.
Compensation Terms
Compensation Terms for Clinical Faculty Teaching in the MD Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs (July 1, 2023- June 30, 2025)
This document applies only to clinical faculty teaching in the MD Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education Programs.
Compensation Terms for Standing Committees and Search Committees for Senior Leadership (July 1, 2024- June 30, 2025)
This document applies to clinical faculty in all programs in the Faculty of Medicine.
On Call Payments
Eligible clinical faculty members teaching in the MD Program invoice for their on-call teaching.
Vancouver Fraser Medical Program
Effective July 1, 2023, the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) only accepts clinical faculty’s on-call teaching invoices electronically via an online form. For VFMP on-call invoices submission inquiries, please email vfmp.oncallteaching@ubc.ca.
Island Medical Program, Southern Medical Program & Northern Medical Program
Please continue to use the On Call Invoice Template to submit on-call teaching invoices to the Island Medical Program (IMP), Southern Medical Program (SMP), and Northern Medical Program (NMP). Submission instructions can be found on page 2 of the invoice template.
Deadline
The deadline to submit an on-call teaching invoice for all sites is December 31, six (6) months after the July 1 to June 30 period closes.
Clinical Faculty Engagement Program
This multi-year initiative, aligned with the Faculty’s Strategic Plan, is designed to:
- Enhance engagement and support for clinical faculty
- Ensure consistency across departments and schools
- Recognize the vital contributions of clinical faculty
- Sustain excellence in our education and research missions
As part of this initiative, the newly revised Policy on Clinical Faculty Appointments is being rolled out.
