Program: PhD, Reproductive and Developmental Sciences
Year in program: 3rd year
Hometown: Ottawa, ON

What inspired you to pursue your program?
I initially became interested in early human brain development during my undergraduate studies, and decided to pursue these interests further with graduate school. When searching for programs to fit my academic goals, Reproductive and Developmental Sciences (RDS) at UBC was a clear first choice for me. Not only was this program offering exceptional opportunities in knowledge acquisition and exposure to a high-quality research environment that closely paralleled my specific interest in developmental biology, but it was also located in one of the most incredible places on earth: British Columbia.

Moving to Vancouver to pursue my PhD was the single best decision I have made in my life. I’m delighted with the opportunities I have, since they will be paramount for my future career pursuits in medicine, and ultimately as a clinician scientist.

What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?
My PhD studies have been challenging, fast-paced, and exciting. My research project is focused on early human brain development in the context of maternal antidepressant use during pregnancy. I am looking forward to submitting my first manuscripts for publication this fall, and attending more national and international conferences to gain exposure, feedback, and networking opportunities with other members of my field. I’m also looking forward to reaching candidacy, and traveling to Scotland with my grandfather later this year.

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
When I talk about my project, people are often surprised to hear that I am engaged in clinical research, and that I work directly with human fetuses, 6-day-old newborns, and their mothers. Also, I almost pursued visual arts instead of health sciences coming out of high school. I have a hidden talent in drawing and use to enter art competitions.

Best piece of advice:
I have 2 pieces of advice to share. First, dedicate some time every week to just read literature relevant to your project. Second, prioritize work-life balance. This has maintained stability in my mental and physical health, which has helped immensely with productivity, curiosity for new knowledge, and the sense of pride in my work.

What superpower do you wish you had?
Ability to pause time! Life is short, and time sometimes seems to fly by.

Where in the world would you like to get lost?
Ireland. This is a place I have yet to travel, and I have family roots there that I would love to explore. I’ve also heard that it’s gorgeous!
