UBC Medicine trainees receive federal support to shape future of Canadian research

By Qian Chow | July 28, 2025

More than 30 UBC Faculty of Medicine graduate students and postdoctoral fellows have been recognized for research excellence with new federal funding that will empower them to continue advancing impactful health research for all Canadians.

The trainees are the recipients of federal scholarships and fellowships announced earlier this month by Canada’s three research granting agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The recipients all excel academically and demonstrate exceptional leadership potential as they accelerate discovery and shape the future of Canada’s research landscape. The awards support emerging scholars to push the boundaries of knowledge and drive innovation in their fields, which include personalized cancer medicine, mental health, women’s health and more.

Across UBC, more than 165 doctoral students, three postdoctoral fellows and 232 master’s students were recognized for their achievements.
