UBC Medicine researchers Sarah Hedtrich and Arun John Peter among new Canada Research Chairs

By Qian Chow | March 19, 2025

Two researchers from the UBC Faculty of Medicine are among the new Canada Research Chairs recently announced by the Government of Canada.

The Canada Research Chairs Program enables Canadian universities to achieve the highest levels of research excellence and become world-class research centres. By advancing cutting-edge research, chairholders are improving the health and well-being of Canadians, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness, and training the next generation of talent through student supervision, teaching and the coordination of other researchers’ work.

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, who was Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry at the time of the announcement, shared the results in Ottawa as part of the Government of Canada’s investment of more than $308 million to advance research and innovation projects.

In total, six UBC researchers were announced as new and renewed Canada Research Chairs, representing an investment of $5.1 million.
