The Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia is pleased to announce the following appointments:

- Dr. Roger Wong as Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education;

Dr. Paul Winwood: Regional Associate Dean, Northern B.C. and Vice Provost Medicine at UNBC
Paul Winwood
Dr. Winwood is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Site Leader for Internal Medicine in the Northern Medical Program (NMP), a joint program of UBC and UNBC. In his new role, Dr. Winwood will lead medical education and training in Northern B.C., including the expansion of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education opportunities. He also will promote collaboration among faculty members and students in research and interprofessional education; foster a sense of community among students and a desire to work in northern B.C.; help to develop continuing education programs for practitioners in the region; and work closely with partners, such as Northern Health, to facilitate the achievement of those goals.
Most of Dr. Winwood’s practice takes place in the Clinical Teaching Unit of the University Hospital of Northern B.C., working with residents and third-year medical students. In his gastroenterology practice, he has established a large practice including patients with inflammatory bowel disease and chronic liver disease. He recently secured funding to develop Endoscopic Ultrasound and Capsule Enteroscopy in Prince George, with funds donated by the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. He also has worked to develop shared care processes between specialists, family practitioners, and other healthcare workers in Northern BC. His current research focuses on the expression of proteoglycans and ADAMTS enzymes in liver fibrosis.
Dr. Winwood, who immigrated to Canada in 2008 from the United Kingdom, received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) with University Distinction in Pathology (1985) from the London Hospital Medical College at the University of London in 1985. After studying in a three-year doctorate program and submitting a thesis of his basic science research in the role of hepatic macrophages in liver fibrosis at the University of Southampton, he received a Doctor of Medicine (DM) in 1994. He completed the Specialist Accreditation in General (internal) Medicine and Gastroenterology (CCST equivalent) from the Joint Committee in Higher Medical Training (U.K.) in 1996. He was accredited as an Educator from the Royal College of Physicians (U.K.) in 2004 and held administrative positions in medical education in the University of Southampton and Wessex Deanery between 1997 and 2006. He was certified as an Academic Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 2008.
Dr. Roger Wong: Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education

Dr. Wong, a Clinical Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Medicine, is a Consultant Physician and Head of the Geriatric Consultation Program at Vancouver General Hospital. As Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education, he will provide overall leadership of residency education programs, a role that will include ensuring that the CanMEDS framework is integrated into the Faculty’s programs; leading postgraduate medical education development; representing the Faculty in discussions with the B.C. Ministry of Health and accrediting and licensing organizations about postgraduate medical education, health human resource planning and resident training requirements, financial management, allocation of residency positions to programs, distribution and expansion of residency training programs and funding; and interacting with the Ministry of Health and Canada Immigration to prepare and submit applications for resident work permits and visas. His appointment is effective July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017.
Dr. Wong is President of the Canadian Geriatrics Society and founded the state-of-the-art Acute Care for Elders Units (ACE) in Vancouver, which has been implemented nationally and internationally. His clinical research focuses on hospital medicine in vulnerable older adults, including quality improvement in acute care geriatrics. Dr. Wong has published and lectured extensively on geriatric medicine and medical education, and has been invited as Visiting Professor by national and international centers. Dr. Wong is an invited member of multiple peer-review boards for scientific publications in the fields of geriatric medicine, internal medicine, and medical education. He has received numerous awards of appreciation from the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia to recognize his advocacy work in the community.
Dr. Wong received his MD degree from the University of Alberta in 1992 and completed postgraduate and fellowship training there. He joined UBC in 1997 and was promoted to Clinical Professor in 2010. He has taken on a number of educational leadership roles within the Faculty, including Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education, Assistant Dean of Faculty Development, Chair of the MD Undergraduate Program Curriculum Renewal Exit Competencies Working Group, and Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program from 2004 to 2012. He has been serving as Interim Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education since May. He has received numerous teaching awards in recognition of his teaching excellence, including the UBC Killam Teaching Prize in 2007, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Donald Richards Wilson Award in 2007, and the Department of Medicine Master Teacher Award in 2012. Nationally, he is a member of the Royal College Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine Examination Boards, and internationally, he was elected to the Fellowship of the American College of Physicians in 2005.
Dr. Bruce Fleming: Associate Dean, Admissions
Bruce Fleming
Dr. Fleming, a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, is a physician in the Emergency Department at Vancouver General Hospital. As Associate Dean, Admissions, he will oversee the MD undergraduate admissions process from application to candidate selection and site placement. The Associate Dean, Admissions ensures that admissions activities align with the strategic priorities and plan of the Faculty and ongoing curriculum renewal. The Associate Dean coordinates outreach to prospective applicants; leads admissions process improvement and policy development in that area; and conducts research, in collaboration with the Evaluation Studies Unit and others, assessing admissions process effectiveness and outcomes.
Dr. Fleming, who teaches medical students and residents in formal and bedside settings has provided significant contributions to core curriculum development and medical education at UBC during the recent expansion and distribution of the medical undergraduate program. He has been awarded the honour of “outstanding teacher” by fourth-year medical students and residents in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Fleming assisted undergraduates in developing a project in 2001 entitled “Ethics and Global Health” and has been an advocate for the ongoing representation of students at the annual Canadian Federation of Medical Students meeting. Dr. Fleming sits on the UBC Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 2003, Dr. Fleming was awarded the Silver Anniversary Achievement Award by his UBC medical school classmates for his contributions to the undergraduate program in the Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Fleming received his MD degree from UBC in 1978, and continued his training in Napier, New Zealand. Upon returning to Canada, he received his certification in Family Practice and his Emergency Medicine Fellowship Certification in 1987. He served as Associate Dean, Student Affairs from 1999 to 2007, and then Executive Director of the Council of Undergraduate Associate Deans from 2007 to 2012. Dr. Fleming has been serving as Interim Associate Dean, Admissions since November 2011.
