Susan Forwell named Outstanding Occupational Therapist of the Year

By dcc2012 | November 24, 2017

Susan Forwell, Head of the UBC Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy, has received the 2017 Outstanding Occupational Therapist Award for her exceptional contribution to the profession.

Dr. Forwell is a dedicated Canadian occupational therapist and scientist who has sustained a 35-year commitment to her professional community. Her research has provided patients with chronic conditions — particularly multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury and brain injury — with credible programs and strategies to manage difficult symptoms, like fatigue, tremor, difficulty with hand function, and cognitive changes, so that they can participate in their life roles.

Her leadership and influence in the professional community spans local, national and international organizations and includes mentorship of students and health professionals from across the globe. She is a tenacious advocate for occupational therapy and occupational science and does not hesitate to meet with leaders in health care, politicians, and renowned researchers to anchor the necessity of meaningful engagement in daily life.

The prestigious honour, presented by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists British Columbia (CAOT-BC), was awarded to Dr. Forwell at the College of Occupational Therapists of BC’s AGM Day, held October 28, 2017. During the annual meeting, she delivered a keynote address, entitled Beyond Function to Occupational Comfort.
