Researchers awarded funding to mitigate COVID-19 pandemic impacts on children, youth and families

Three projects led by UBC faculty of medicine researchers have received funding to focus on understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children, youth and families.

The Government of Canada is providing the funding for the research through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The Michael Smith Health Research BC and the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation are providing funds to support several projects on the impact of the pandemic on children, youth and families.

Faculty of medicine recipients and projects

  • Principal Investigator: Rodney Knight, department of medicine
    Project: FOCUS on Adolescents: A mixed-methods study to optimize COVID-19 recovery and renewal efforts among adolescents in Canada and France
    Funding Amount: $112,465
  • Principal Investigators: Ian Pike and Shelina Babul, department of pediatrics
    Project: Examining the effects of public health policies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic on unintentional injuries in children and youth in British Columbia and Ontario, including as related to equity and marginalized populations
  • Funding Amount: $140,948

  • Principal Investigators: S. Evelyn Stewart and Jana Davidson, department of psychiatry
    Project: Impact of Social Determinants of Mental Health on Child and Parent Risk, Resilience and Support Access in the COVID-19 Era: A Nested Mixed-Methods Study of Short and Long-Term Outcomes
    Funding Amount: $110,510
