Dr. Frederick Mikelberg: Vice-Dean, Academic Affairs
Frederick Mikelberg
Dr. Mikelberg, whose second term as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences ended June 30, joined the UBC Faculty of Medicine in 1984. He has served as Director of Undergraduate Education, Residency Program Director and Director of the Glaucoma Fellowship Training Program.
His clinical practice is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with glaucoma and his research examines the assessment of the optic disc in glaucoma. Dr. Mikelberg is an invited member of the Glaucoma Research Society of the International Congress of Ophthalmology and a Past President of the Canadian Glaucoma Society. He is a founding member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Glaucoma, a former President of the Association of Canadian University Professors of Ophthalmology, and has received the Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. David Maberley: Head, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences
David Maberley
Dr. Maberley, a Professor in the Department, performs research in the areas of ophthalmic epidemiology and the medical and surgical management of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, complex retinal detachments, and high myopia. He established the Canadian Retinal Trials Group that undertakes multi-centered randomized controlled trials, is President of the Canadian Retina Society, and sits on the board of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society.
Dr. Maberley has shown a profound commitment to providing care to underserved populations. He established an eye clinic at the Vancouver Native Health Society (VNHS) to provide better access to primary and secondary eye care services to residents of the Downtown Eastside, co-developed a curriculum for medical students and residents about social and medical issues affecting inner-city individuals, and participated in the development of the VNHS Inner City Health Care web-based medical resource. He also heads the ophthalmology component of the British Columbia First Nations On-Reserve Mobile Diabetes project.
Dr. Aslam Anis: Director, Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS)
Aslam Anis
Dr. Anis is a Professor, Program Director of the Master of Health Administration Program and Co-lead of the Health Care Services & Systems theme in the School of Population and Public Health. He is also a Senior Scientist at the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada and the National Co-Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Canadian HIV Trials Network.
Dr. Anis’s research activities are extensive and his work has been instrumental in shaping economic policies in Canada, notably those governing access to anti-retroviral therapy (ART) for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Anis was among the first scholars worldwide to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of ART and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals on health resource use and costs among HIV/AIDS patients treated and not treated with ART. Research by Dr. Anis in the area of pharmaceutical pricing policies in Canada has also attracted worldwide attention since the 1990s, and he continues to publish on the economic impact of changing drug price regulations.
Dr. Sandra Jarvis-Selinger: Assistant Dean, Faculty Development
Sandra Jarvis-Selinger
Dr. Jarvis-Selinger, an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and a junior scholar at the Centre for Health Education Scholarship, earned a PhD in Human Learning, Development and Instruction from UBC’s Faculty of Education. Her research focuses on educational innovation and knowledge translation, which specifically includes the development of excellence in teaching; curriculum design, development and assessment; and the use of technology to support education.
One of her current projects within teaching focuses on designing, implementing and evaluating successful “residents as teachers” programs across various departments and divisions in the Faculty of Medicine. In addition she successfully adapted this program for orthpeadic residents at Penn State Hershey Medical Centre and is also the educational faculty lead for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ course for Orthopaedic Educators. In the area of technology and education, Dr. Jarvis-Selinger is involved with several projects focused on the use of electronic communities of practice (eCoPs) to support faculty development. Another direction of her research in this area is using eCoPs to facilitate connections between communities and clinicians. All of her research focuses on how to translate knowledge into action.
