Four faculty members recognized as Mental Health Difference Makers

By jwong | October 16, 2017

Four faculty members are among 150 Canadians being recognized as Mental Health Difference Makers by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

From more than 3,700 names put forward from across the country, the Faculty of Medicine’s Jehannine Austin, Skye Barbic, Perry Kendall, and Todd Woodward are among 150 Canadians being honoured this year as part of the CAMH Difference Makers movement, a national initiative celebrating individuals who are changing the course of mental health.

Dr. Jehannine Austin, Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Medical Genetics

In 2012, Dr. Austin established the world’s first specialty clinic for psychiatric genetic counselling. Discover how she’s using genetic counselling to help clients deal with the guilt, shame and stigma often attached to mental illness, while also helping them to develop strategies to protect their mental health.

Dr. Skye Barbic, Assistant Professor, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy

Working in partnership with people with lived experience, Dr. Skye Barbic created Canada’s first measure of recovery: the Canadian Personal Recovery Outcome Measure (C-PROM). Find out how this tool is changing the way people living with mental illness and their clinicians measure recovery.

Dr. Perry Kendall, Clinical Professor, School of Population and Public Health

In 2003, Dr. Kendall helped make history through leading the political process at the national level that established the path for Vancouver to open the first supervised legal injection site in North America. Explore how Dr. Kendall’s revolutionary views on public health have saved lives.

Dr. Todd Woodward, Professor, Department of Psychiatry

Dr. Woodward is committed to giving people living with schizophrenia the tools to manage harmful thoughts. As co-developer of a free program called metacognitive training (MCT), he is working to improve the lives of thousands of people living with schizophrenia and their communities.

Celebrations for national recipients of the CAMH Difference Makers –150 Leading Canadians for Mental Health Award will take place across Canada this fall.
