The UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Office of Creative and Communications (C&C) has received two 2023 Gold Quill Awards from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), recognizing Pathways Magazine and the Faculty’s strategic plan, Building the Future: 2021-2026, for global excellence in communications.
For more than 40 years, the Gold Quill Awards have been IABC’s premier awards program in the field of business communications worldwide. Gold Quill is the only awards program that honours the dedication, innovation and passion of communicators on a global scale.
The 2023 winners were selected by a blue-ribbon panel of communications experts who reviewed 395 entries from 16 countries and evaluated the submissions at 10 global sites.
“We are extremely honoured to have received these prestigious international awards,” said Katie White, executive director, Office of Creative and Communications. “Both Pathways Magazine and Building the Future are shining examples of our team’s commitment to innovative and inspiring communications that showcase the Faculty’s transformational impact on health here at home and around the world. This wouldn’t have been possible without the countless researchers, learners, faculty and staff who do that tireless work and entrust us to share their remarkable stories.”

The Interactive Explainer from Pathways: Hope, accelerated — the most recent edition of the Faculty’s digital and print magazine — was recognized with an Award of Excellence in the Creative Design category. The Explainer breaks down the complex subject of translational medicine using hand-drawn illustrations, stylish animation and tangible step-by-step examples to demonstrate how UBC is accelerating biomedical innovation in B.C. and Canada.
The Explainer was an important advocacy tool with policymakers and other stakeholders in support of UBC’s successful application to establish Canada’s Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub.
The Office of C&C also received a Gold Quill Award of Merit in the Publications category for Building the Future: 2021-2026, the Faculty’s refreshed strategic plan. Building the Future weaves together inspiring vignettes and striking visuals to detail the innovation that defines the Faculty and its commitment to train the next generation of doctors, health professionals and scientists, and to turning scientific discovery into life-saving medicines and treatments.
Dr. Dermot Kelleher, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health, UBC, shared his appreciation for the achievements of the Office of C&C.
“This recognition speaks volumes about the dedication, creativity and impact of our Creative and Communications team,” said Dr. Kelleher. “Their exceptional work conveying the Faculty’s vision, research breakthroughs and educational initiatives has elevated our visibility on a global scale and strengthened our reputation and connections with communities near and far. These accolades are a testament to their outstanding efforts in promoting the transformative impact of medicine.”
The 2023 Gold Quill Awards will be presented at the IABC World Conference in Toronto on June 6.
