Five researchers from the faculty of medicine have been awarded funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF).

They are among a number of UBC researchers who collectively received more than $2 million in funding for 16 projects.

The JELF awards were announced by Parliamentary Secretary Andy Filmore on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, as part of a larger announcement of close to $45 million to support 150 research infrastructure projects at 43 institutions across the country. This funding ensure researchers have the labs and equipment they need to carry out world-class research and technology development.

Faculty of medicine recipients and their projects:

  • Alexis Black, School of Audiology & Speech Sciences
    Language and Development Lab
  • Ryan Flannigan, department of urologic sciences
Infrastructure to Establish a Combined Regenerative and Precision Medicine Reproductive Research Program
  • Kathryn Isaac, department of surgery, and Raymond Ng, Centre for Heart Lung Innovation
Development of Natural Language Processing & Machine Leaning to accelerate breast cancer outcomes research
  • Ramon Klein Geltink, department of pathology and laboratory medicine
Metabolic monitoring of immune cell function
  • Seth Parker, department of biochemistry and molecular biology
Functional metabolism and transport using mass spectrometry (MeTSpec)
