Faculty of Medicine researchers awarded funding to improve health outcomes and patient care

Eight members from the Faculty of Medicine have received awards from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) 2020 Innovation to Commercialization (I2C) and Health Professional-Investigator (HPI) programs. 

Funding from the MSFHR Innovation to Commercialization program will support researchers to advance their discoveries or inventions towards practical application, resulting in products or technologies that improve health outcomes and enrich B.C.‘s health innovation ecosystem. 

The Health Professional-Investigator program will support health professionals who are actively involved in patient care to conduct and apply research relevant to health or the health system that can lead to improved quality of care. 

Innovation to Commercialization award recipients and their research projects: 

  • Lori Brotto, Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 
    Research: eSense: an online psychological intervention for women’s health 
  • Robert Holt, Professor, Department of Medical Genetics
    Research: Development and application of comprehensive T-cell receptor reactivity profiling technologies to aid in the discovery of novel immune cell therapies 

Health Professional-Investigator award recipients and their research projects: 

  • Jennifer Coelho, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry
    Research: Treatment of pediatric mental health problems: Unravelling the role of patient and family motivation in eating disorder outcomes
  • Gordon Francis, Professor, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine
    Research: Redefining atherosclerosis: Characterizing and targeting smooth muscle cell foam cells for the treatment and prevention of coronary heart disease and stroke
  • Alina Gerrie, Assistant Professor, Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine
    Research: Cost-effective biomarker driven treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia in the era of precision medicine
  • Christopher Napier, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy
    Research: Development and evaluation of a novel wearable gait analysis tool for remote monitoring and assessment of patients with musculoskeletal injuries
  • Lucia Nappi, Assistant Professor, Department of Urologic Sciences
    Research: Moving towards a biology-based care model in germ cell tumors
  • Mypinder Sekhon, Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine
    Research: Delineating the pathophysiology of hypoxic ischemic brain injury after cardiac arrest to identify therapeutic targets.
