Two members of UBC’s faculty of medicine community have been honoured by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) for their outstanding contributions to academic medicine in Canada.
Dr. Faisal Khosa, an associate professor in radiology, was honoured with the May Cohen Equity, Diversity, and Gender Award.
“I am honoured and humbled by this award and am grateful to UBC for providing a nurturing environment and consistent support for my research, advocacy and mentoring of Underrepresented in Medicine’s at UBC and beyond,” Dr. Khosa said.

Dr. Heather Buckley, a clinical assistant professor in the department of family practice
The award recognizes the outstanding effort or achievement of an individual, program, department or faculty in improving the gender-equity environment and diversity in academic medicine in Canada.
Dr. Heather Buckley, a clinical assistant professor in the department of family practice and the Regional Faculty Development Coordinator for the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program, was honoured with the AFMC Award for Outstanding Contribution to Faculty Development in Canada.
“Working in the area of faculty development has brought much enjoyment to my professional life. To be recognized at a national level for the work that I have done is humbling,” Dr. Buckley said. “To me, this award is also a representation of the many people who encourage, support and contribute to my own faculty development.”
The award recognizes excellence in faculty development by an individual faculty member in a Faculty of Medicine in Canada. This award is intended to emphasize the importance of faculty development in academic medicine.
