Faculty members honoured at the Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremony

On May 14, the Faculty of Medicine celebrated the academic achievements and distinguished careers of faculty members during its annual Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremony.

From the Departments of Surgery, Midwifery and beyond, recipients from across the faculty wore black gowns to mark their recent promotions to Professor, Clinical Professor or Professor of Teaching.

Kate Shannon, professor in the Department of Medicine

One of the recipients, Kate Shannon, was promoted from associate professor to tenured professor in the Department of Medicine. She also holds the Canada Research Chair in Gender Equity, Sexual Health and Global Policy. She is also the executive director of the Centre for Gender and Sexual Health Equity.

“This recognition is an incredible honour and also tremendously humbling,” Shannon said. “For me, it is confirmation that this is just the beginning and much more work needs to be done to advance gender equity and address sexual health gaps for marginalized and under serviced communities.”

Special recognition was also reserved for members who were granted Emeritus or Emerita status for the significant contributions they made over the course of their careers. In his opening remarks, Dermot Kelleher, dean of the faculty of medicine and vice-president of health, congratulated the members on their academic excellence and service to the community.

“Your research in all areas — from occupational science and therapy to pediatrics to health services and policy — has had a profound positive impact on patient and public health in communities across B.C., across Canada and around the world,” he said. “And your dedication to teaching has enabled the success of countless students now serving as dedicated care providers and scientists.”

Your research in all areas has had a profound positive impact on patient and public health… and your dedication to teaching has enabled the success of countless students.
