Drs. Morris Barer, Deborah Money appointed to Order of Canada

UBC faculty of medicine’s Drs. Morris Barer and Deborah Money were recently appointed to the Order of Canada.

Considered one of the country’s highest honours, the Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have enriched the lives of others and made extraordinary contributions to Canadian society.

The latest appointments were announced December 28 by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada. Drs. Barer and Money are among seven UBC community members being inducted, including UBC Chancellor The Honourable Steven Lewis Point.

“I greatly value the opportunity to celebrate individuals whose perseverance, ingenuity and community spirit have benefited Canadians throughout the country,” said Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, in a news release. “As governor general, I have seen first-hand that our communities are rich in both excellence and diversity, which we need to do our utmost to recognize.”

A total of 78 individuals were appointed to the Order of Canada, including three companions, 15 officers, one honorary officer and 59 members. The appointees will be invited to an investiture ceremony at a later date to receive their insignia.

Dr. Morris Barer

Dr. Morris Barer, C.M.

Dr. Barer, professor emeritus at the school of population and public health, is recognized for his leadership and groundbreaking research in health services policy.

Dr. Deborah Money

Dr. Deborah Money, C.M.

Dr. Money, professor and head of the department of obstetrics & gynaecology, is recognized for her contributions to women’s health, notably in the field of reproductive infectious diseases, as a researcher, clinician, teacher and mentor.
