Dr. Thalia Field has been named to Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 list for 2020, an annual recognition of the exceptional achievements of 40 outstanding Canadians under the age of 40.
Dr. Field, an associate professor in the department of medicine, is a stroke neurologist and clinician-researcher with a focus on clinical trials. She is currently leading a national study examining treatment strategies and prognosis of cerebral venous thrombosis, a rare cause of stroke primarily affecting younger women. She has a particular interest in process improvement in clinical trials, including working with patients to identify important outcomes, and integrating existing and emergent technology to enhance efficiency and engage under-represented populations.
She also investigates the impact of social determinants on brain health and has an outreach neurology clinic on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. She is a Heart and Stroke Foundation National New Investigator and J.M. Henry Barnett Scholar and holds a Health Professional Investigator Award from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and a Clinician-Scientist Award from the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.
“Being named as one of this year’s honourees was some very welcome good news! It’s very exciting to be recognized alongside a group of people committed to innovation and positive change,” Dr. Field said. “The honour is shared with the many people I have the pleasure of working with – research team members, clinical colleagues, interdisciplinary collaborators in computer science and engineering, my patients and their supporters, and the outstanding mentors I have had at UBC and from across the country.”
Dr. Field and her fellow honourees were selected from over 900 nominees by an independent advisory board, comprising more than 25 business leaders from across Canada. Honourees were chosen on four key criteria: vision and innovation; leadership; impact and influence; and, social responsibility.
Founded in 1995, Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 has recognized more than 800 outstanding Canadians and is the country’s most coveted award for young business leaders. Honourees have a remarkable track record of achievement after they are named; alumni include hundreds of nationally and internationally prominent CEOs, executives, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
Recipients will be honoured at a series of events to take place in 2021.
