Dr. Bob Bluman, Executive Medical Director of the Faculty’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD), has been awarded the 2019 Doug Cochrane Leadership in Quality Award from the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council.

Dr. Bluman has been envisioning, developing and delivering CPD for more than 35 years, merging his experience as an educator, clinician and forward thinker. Through his leadership, the Faculty’s CPD team has launched several innovative programs aimed at enhancing the skills of health professionals throughout British Columbia and around the world, including:
- ThisChangedMyPractice.com, an online resource which allows clinicians to outline to others the impactful practice changes they have made or would recommend to others;
- initiation of the BC Physician Integration Program, which supports international medical graduates as they move from the provisional registry to full licensure to practice medicine in BC;
- creation of the UBC Rural CPD Program, which brings a broad range of rurally relevant training and online learning opportunities to rural practitioners and communities;
- and initiation and development of the College of Family Physicians Canada national award winning eCoach and CME on the Run! programs.
The award selection committee recognized Dr. Bluman’s valuable leadership over time as well as how UBC CPD has been built into a hub for positive change in the health care system through cutting-edge clinical education programs that are aligned with quality and practice improvement.
“Dr. Bluman has created a working environment that inspires open communication, collaboration and innovation,” says Sonia Lamont, Interim Director, UBC Continuing Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine. “His efforts have resulted in significant improvements in the quality of care currently being delivered in B.C. and elsewhere and will continue to have great impact for many years to come.”
