Dr. Mark Tyndall
Dr. Mark Tyndall has been appointed Director, UBC Centre for Disease Control, effective September 2, 2014.
Previously a Professor in the UBC Department of Medicine, Dr. Tyndall joins us most recently from the University of Ottawa where he was Head of Infectious Diseases as well as Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He was selected following a highly competitive national recruitment and selection process.
Dr. Tyndall obtained his MD and FRCPC in Internal Medicine from McMaster University and completed an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Manitoba. He received a Doctoral degree in Epidemiology from Harvard University with a focus on health and human rights. He has lived and worked in Nairobi, Kenya on HIV transmission as part of a WHO collaborative project. For over a decade, he has led community-based research projects with a focus on HIV, poverty and drug use in Vancouver and Ottawa. Dr. Tyndall is an author on more than 200 academic papers and has been a strong advocate for evidenced-based public health policy. He has received several academic honours during the course of his career, including a Michael Smith Foundation Senior Scientist award, and the Distinguished Medical Research Lecturer Award and Master Teacher Award from the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
In his role, Dr. Tyndall will represent the research needs of faculty, staff and trainees at the UBC-CDC campus and participate in fostering innovative research, education, knowledge translation, and policy development. Dr. Tyndall has also been appointed Professor in the School of Population & Public Health, and as previously announced, appointed to the role of Executive Medical Director BCCDC and Deputy Provincial Health Officer by the Provincial Health Services Authority.
Dr. Tyndall’s appointment follows the outstanding leadership of Dr. Robert Brunham. Dr. Brunham had provided extensive contributions during his tenure.
