Zoya Khan

By Alex Tsui | August 1, 2024

Hometown: Merritt/Richmond, B.C.
Program: Midwifery
Year in Program: 2

What inspired you to pursue your program?

I have had a fascination with pregnancy and birth since I was a child. I would ask every pregnant person I have ever known about their birth story with wide eyes and rapt attention. I have also always wanted to go into healthcare – I just didn’t know what field. After exploring different avenues in healthcare, it was ultimately the values of midwifery that won me over: Client-led care, an emphasis on continuity of care, promotion of physiological birth and always recognizing and learning from those who came before. I knew I would be able to prosper in this kind of career.

Why did you choose UBC?

Knowing that I ultimately want to be practicing in B.C. and have my career here, UBC was the best option for me. This way I can be learning in the same context I will be practicing in.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I am so excited to start my clinical placement rotations in the upcoming year. The midwifery program is organized so that first year is purely theory, with the following three years being a mix of theory and placement. So, this upcoming year will be my first clinical placement. I cannot wait to put everything I learned in my first year to use in practice and to attend my first birth.
