Home Community: Samson Cree Nation, Maskwacis, Alberta, Treaty 6
Program: Island Medical Program
Year in Program: 1
What inspired you to pursue your program?
I thought about ways or professions that I could use my treaty right to education to serve my community and I settled on medicine, which is another treaty right for my people. I hope to carry on the legacy of my family and Nation and to use my education to heal, teach and lead.
Why did you choose UBC?
Living as a visitor on the territories of the Lekwungen and WSANEC people, I wanted to study medicine in the community that my family and I have made our home and so I chose to study at the Island Medical Program. As a student at the University of Victoria, I developed some great relationships with the students and staff at the First People’s House and I am excited to be studying close by during the next chapter of my education. In studying Indigenous Public Health through UBC’s Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health, I am aware of the progressive policy and action that UBC is taking towards reconciliation and decolonization in health care.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
Seeing the Edmonton Oilers make it back to the Stanley Cup Finals to win their sixth cup.
