Three staff members in the Faculty of Medicine – Tamiza Abji, Patricia Gray and Ravina Johal – were among the six people selected by UBC to participate in Leave for Change this year.

The participants work in developing countries for two to four weeks to share their knowledge and skills with others in an international setting.

Tamiza Abji, in the Evaluation Studies Unit, went to Nepal to revise human resources-related strategy, policy and procedure documents for the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation. She focused on updating the organization’s gender equality and social inclusion strategy and recommending stronger policies and procedures related to harassment.

Patricia Gray, in the Faculty’s Communications Office, developed a new website for Folk Nepal, a social enterprise that supports local handicraft producers by promoting and selling their products, and through the revenue generated, supports social causes including a dental clinic and scholarships for students at two remote schools. After reorganizing the site and migrating it to the WordPress content management system, she trained employees on website maintenance and search engine optimization.

Ravina Johal, in the Centre for Health Education Scholarship, went to Ghana to work with Uniterra, a non-governmental organization that works primarily to improve access, participation and performance of girls in primary and secondary education. She created one-page marketing materials that highlighted Uniterra’s relationship with each of its four partner organizations, as well as one for Uniterra itself.
