Three faculty members recently received the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Merit Award for 2016. This year, the three recipients are Sarah Brears, Dawn Cooper and Kiran Veerapen.

Each year, the Certificate of Merit is awarded to three UBC faculty members who have made a valuable contribution to medical education in our Faculty. The award consists of a certificate and CAME membership for one year.

Dr. Sarah Brears, Years 1 & 2 Site Director, Department of Family Practice received this award for her leadership in the Southern Medical Program in Kelowna. She has led the family medicine component of the preclinical years in the SMP and the other various areas of her role she excels in while managing and juggling a busy clinical practice, including maternity care.

Dr. Dawn Cooper, Associate Director, MD Undergraduate Program, Vancouver Fraser Medical Program received this award for her exception efforts in her role and enthusiasm with which she strives to help students link foundational scientific knowledge to clinical problem solving. She has also played a central role in curriculum renewal, working tirelessly for several years through multiple phases of the curriculum renewal process.

Dr. Kiran Veerapen, Assistant Dean, Faculty Development, MD Undergraduate Program, Vancouver Fraser Medical Program received this award for her instrumental leadership at the Island Medical Program in Victoria. She has worked to inspire and build relationships with clinical faculty members. Dr. Veerapen’s efforts to develop strategic relationships with other regional sites, the central faculty development office, the Centre for Health Education Scholarship, students and others, results in collaboration, exchange of ideas and an increase in capacity of faculty.

The awards will be presented at the CAME Annual General Meeting during the Canadian Conference on Medical Education in Montreal in April.
