Six recipients from UBC, including three from the Faculty of Medicine, are the 2016 winners of the 18th Annual LifeSciences BC Awards. This year’s theme, Local Catalyst | Global Connectivity, reflects those in the community who made an impact to the local ecosystem so that B.C. can connect with the global life sciences community.
Faculty of Medicine recipients include:
- Randy Gascoyne, Clinical Professor, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine | Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research – Aubrey J. Tingle Prize
- Victor Ling, Professor, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine | Dr. Don Rix Award for Lifetime Achievement
- The Friedman Lab, Research group, Department of Medical Genetics | Award for Clinical Research Excellence

Member of the Sauder Faculty Advisory Board - Precision NanoSystems, Inc. – Growth Stage Medtech Company of the Year
2011 UBC spinoff (University-Industry Liaison Office) - Zymeworks Inc. – Life Sciences Company of the Year
Ali Tehrani (Co-Founder and CEO) received his PhD (Microbiology and Immunology) from UBC.
While completing his PhD, Tehrani co-founded the Student Biotechnology Network, for which he received the UBC Faculty of Science Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership in 2002.
The sold out event took place at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver on April 21 where the winners were announced and presented with the LifeSciences BC Awards.
