Four faculty members have received Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals from the Governor General of Canada.

Peter Cooperberg, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Radiology, is a pioneer in ultrasound imaging. A graduate of MIT and McGill University, he has advanced the use of ultrasound in medical diagnosis. Dr. Cooperberg has authored 220 scientific publications and co-founded the “Practical Radiology at Whistler” conference.
In 2012, Dr. Cooperberg received the Order of British Columbia – the highest form of recognition the Province can extend to its citizens.
Paula Gordon, Clinical Professor in the Department of Radiology, was recognized for her work and involvement in Breast Imaging and for her work on the Board of the Canucks for Kids fund. She is the Medical Director of the BC Women’s Hospital Breast Health Program and the Chair of the Academic Committee of the Screening Mammography Program of BC. In 2011, Dr. Gordon received a UBC Killam Teaching Prize in recognition of excellence in teaching.
Dorothy Shaw, Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, is the Vice President, Medical Affairs at BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre. She has been the recipient of several awards for her contributions to reproductive health and equity, including the May Cohen Gender Equity Award from the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada. Dr. Shaw was recognized for being the first woman to lead the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She was previously President of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, at the time the youngest person to ever lead that organization.
Clyde Hertzman (1953 – 2013) was regarded as a world expert in early childhood development. A Professor in the School of Population and Public Health, the founding Director of the Human Early Learning Partnership, and Canada Research Chair in Population Health and Human Development for over a decade, he was awarded the Order of Canada earlier this year in recognition of his influential research on early childhood development and population health.

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal commemorates the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The medal honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
