Faculty members awarded Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals

By Patricia Angel | January 31, 2013

Three faculty members have received Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals from the Governor General of Canada.

Carolyn Gotay, Professor in the School of Population & Public Health, was recognized for her outstanding research on cancer prevention, cancer control, and survivorship. She was among six individuals in British Columbia selected by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) for this award. Dr. Gotay is a psychologist with a unique interest in the knowledge, awareness, and behaviours that contribute to people’s lifestyle choices. She is the Director of the CCS-UBC Cancer Prevention Centre.

David Kuhl, Professor in the Department of Family Practice, was recognized for his work in co-founding the Veteran’s Transition Program (VTP). Dr. Kuhl is the Director of the Centre for Practitioner Renewal (CPR). As the Director of CPR, he has combined his interests in medicine and psychology to develop a program of service, education and research to sustain health care providers in the workplace. Previously, Dr. Kuhl was the physician leader for palliative care at Providence Health Care, one of the first palliative care programs in North America to combine care for persons with cancer as well as for persons with AIDS.

Deborah Money, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, is the Executive Director of the Women’s Health Research Institute. After completing her medical degree and postgraduate training, she became the first physician in Canada to hold specialties in both Infectious Diseases and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Dr. Money established a fellowship in Reproductive Infectious Diseases at UBC and leads a research program including a BC HPV research group, a Canadian HPV vaccine in HIV positive women’s study, a perinatal HIV research program, and a Canadian Vaginal Microbiome team. International recognition includes being the first Canadian President of the Infectious Diseases Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal commemorates the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The medal honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
