Faculty members awarded Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals

Four faculty members have received Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals from the Governor General of Canada.

Kenneth Fung, Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Population & Public Health, was recognized for his leadership and contributions to community services. He has served many organizations including: Vancouver Multicultural Society, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Chinese Canadian Cultural Society of Greater Vancouver, World Assembly of Mental Health, and the Chinese Canadian Medical Society of BC.

 

 

 

Larry Goldenberg, Professor and Head of the Department of Urologic Sciences, has contributed significantly to the research and treatment of prostate cancer in Canada. He has authored nearly 300 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, videos, and conference submissions as well as a book for the lay person which has become an important educational resource for men with prostate cancer in Canada. Dr. Goldenberg was instrumental in establishing the internationally renowned Vancouver Prostate Centre, and is currently the Director of the Men’s Health Initiative of BC. He was recognized for his contributions to health care by being inducted into the Order of British Columbia in 2006 and the Order of Canada in 2009.

 

Roy Purssell, Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Canada, including research and knowledge translation on impaired driving. In addition to his research in the areas of impaired driving, substance abuse, laboratory testing and adverse drug reactions, Dr. Purssell is an Emergency Physician at Vancouver General Hospital, Medical Director of the Drug and Poison Information Centre of BC and the President of the Canadian Association of Poison Control Centres. He was Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Vancouver Acute from 1993 to 2007.

 

Juhn Wada, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry, is an internationally known neuroscientist who devoted his career to research into the cause and treatment of epilepsy. He created the first surgical epilepsy program and seizure investigation monitoring unit in British Columbia, at UBC Hospital. Dr. Wada is retired from practice but still continues his research. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1992.

 

 

 

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal commemorates the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The medal honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
