Dorothy Shaw, the Vice President, Medical Affairs of BC Women’s Hospital and Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, received the Chris Carruthers Excellence in Medical Leadership Award from the Canadian Society of Physician Executives (CSPE) in April and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Distinguished Service Award in May.

The CSPE presents the Chris Carruthers award annually to a physician who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and mentorship of medical leaders in the field of health services leadership and management. The awardee has demonstrated outstanding abilities in one or more of the following categories:

  • Commitment to enhancing the role of physicians in the management of health care delivery organizations
  • Leadership in a hospital or health region management role
  • Significant contribution to leadership development within CSPE, the Canadian Medical Association and/or one of its divisions or affiliated societies

Dr. Shaw is internationally recognized for her publications and advocacy efforts to advance women’s rights and improve the health of women, newborns, and children. Her past accomplishments include being named as Canada’s spokesperson for the G8/G20 by the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health in 2010. She was the Executive Producer for an award-winning documentary “The Cutting Tradition: Insights into FGM” in 2009. In 2010 she was invited to be the inaugural chair of the Canadian Network for Maternal Newborn Child Health.
