Anthony Chow receives Lifetime Achievement Award

By Patricia Angel | April 5, 2013

Anthony ChowAnthony Chow, a Professor Emeritus in the Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Medicine, received the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (AMMI) Canada.

He was recognized for his outstanding and distinguished career as an infectious disease physician who is nationally and internationally acknowledged as an exemplary researcher, teacher, mentor, and leader.

The award was presented to Dr. Chow on April 4, 2013 at the AMMI Canada – Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Conference in Québec City.

Dr. Chow established the first Infectious Diseases training program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He also directed UBC’s MD/PhD Program, was a founding partner of UBC’s Experimental Medicine Program, and led both the Canadian Bacterial Diseases Network Centre of Excellence and the CIHR Training Program for Translational Research in Infectious Disease.

With the help of the Vancouver General Hospital Pharmacy, Dr. Chow established one of the first antimicrobial stewardship programs in Canada – leading to improved quality of care and reduced antibiotic costs. With Dr. Grant Stiver, he also developed the first outpatient intravenous antibiotic program in BC.
