Faculty members honoured at the 2022 Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremony

By dcc2012 | May 26, 2022

On May 25 the Faculty of Medicine celebrated the academic achievements and distinguished careers of faculty members during the most recent Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremony.

From the departments of occupational science and occupational therapy to medical genetics and beyond, recipients from across the faculty wore black gowns to mark their recent promotions to Professor, Clinical Professor or Professor of Teaching.

Dr. Janice Kwon

One of the recipients, Dr. Janice Kwon, was promoted from associate professor to tenured professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology where she is also department vice head.

Dr. Kwon is a gynecologic oncologist at UBC, Vancouver General Hospital, and BC Cancer. She is also a clinician scientist affiliated with OvCaRe and Chair of the Priority and Evaluations Committee at BC Cancer. She serves as the Chair of the National BRCA Collaborative, and on the Committee on Economic Analysis for the Canadian Cancer Trials Group. Her expertise is in hereditary cancer syndromes and conducting cost-effectiveness analyses of testing criteria and risk-reducing interventions.

“It is truly an honour to be promoted, and to join the company of such highly respected colleagues in my department,” Dr. Kwon said. “This could not have been possible without the support of my department, academic environment and collaborators, and I feel very fortunate to be here. I look forward to contributing to the academic mandate of this department, by guiding the career path of the next generation of trainees, and developing research collaborations with partners throughout UBC and worldwide.”

Special recognition was also reserved for members who were granted Emeritus or Emerita status for the significant contributions they made over the course of their careers.
