UBC faculty of medicine members appointed to the Order of Canada for 2021

UBC faculty of medicine’s Drs. Pieter Cullis, Connie Eaves, Donald McKenzie and Peter Zandstra have been appointed to the Order of Canada.

The appointments were announced by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada. Considered one of the country’s highest civilian honours, the Order of Canada recognizes those who have enriched the lives of others and made extraordinary contributions to the nation.

“The appointment of Drs. Pieter Cullis, Connie Eaves, Donald McKenzie and Peter Zandstra to the Order of Canada demonstrates their remarkable contributions to improving the health and well-being of people across Canada,” says Dr. Dermot Kelleher, Dean of UBC’s faculty of medicine and Vice President, Health at UBC. “We are extremely proud of their achievements and dedication to serve patients and communities throughout B.C. and the country.”

Dr. Pieter Cullis

Dr. Cullis, a professor in the faculty of medicine’s department of biochemistry and molecular biology, is being recognized “for his contributions to the advancement of biomedical research and drug development, and for his mentorship of the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs.”

 
 
 

Dr. Connie J. Eaves

Dr. Connie J. Eaves

Dr. Eaves, a professor in the faculty of medicine’s department of medical genetics and the School of Biomedical Engineering, is being recognized “for advancing our understanding of cancer development, and for her national and international leadership in stem cell biology.”

 
 
 

Dr. Donald McKenzie

Dr. Donald McKenzie

Dr. McKenzie, a professor emeritus in the department of family practice’s division of sport and exercise medicine and professor emeritus of kinesiology in the faculty of education, is being recognized “for his expertise in sports medicine and for his seminal research on the effectiveness of exercise as an intervention for breast cancer patients.”

 
 

Dr. Peter Zandstra

Dr. Peter Zandstra

Dr. Zandstra, a professor and director of the School of Biomedical Engineering, is being recognized “for his pioneering leadership in the field of stem cell bioengineering and its subsequent innovative health and economic impacts.”
