Faculty of medicine researchers receive John R. Evans Leaders Fund awards

UBC Medicine 2021 John R. Evans Leaders Fund recipients

Researchers from the faculty of medicine have been awarded funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF).

They are among a number of UBC researchers who collectively received more than $5.7 million in funding for 37 projects.

The JELF awards were announced by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, as part of a larger announcement of more than more than $77 million to support 332 research infrastructure projects at 50 universities across the country. This contribution will help universities attract and retain top researchers.

Results announced include November 2020, March 2021 and June 2021 funding rounds.

Faculty of medicine recipients and their projects:

    • Ali Bashashati, School of Biomedical Engineering
      AI-driven Platform for Translating Precision Medicine Discoveries in Women’s Cancers
      Award: $325,000
    • Anna Blakney, School of Biomedical Engineering
      RNA Enhancement And Clinical Translation (REACT) Platform
      Award: $125,000
    • Dr. Ethan Greenblatt, department of biochemistry and molecular biology
      The RNA Regulation Laboratory (RRL): A platform for discovering the roles of RNA regulation in autism spectrum disorders
      Award: $220,000
    • Dr. Jonathan Rayment, department of pediatrics
      Hyperpolarized 129-xenon Paediatric Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
      $ 200,000  (5 years)
    • Dr. Julia Schmidt, department of occupational science and occupational therapy
      Innovations for Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
      Award: $120,596
    • Dr. Tamara Vanderwal, department of psychiatry
      Naturalistic Neuroimaging of Child Psychiatric Disorders
      Award: $124,319
    • Dr. Jackie Whittaker, department of physical therapy
      Musculoskeletal Health and Mobility Laboratory Infrastructure
      Award: $125,000
