Match Day 2020: UBC medical students celebrate milestone on journey to becoming a doctor

By dcc2012 | March 3, 2020

On March 3, 2020, UBC medical students gathered in Vancouver, Prince George, Victoria and Kelowna to celebrate the results of Match Day – the first round of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS), which pairs final-year medical students with residency programs in communities across Canada.

Join us as we share in their excitement and learn more about the next steps for a few of these students.

Meet a few of these students, and join us in celebrating their next steps

Leah Trippell

Matched to: Family Medicine, UBC (Strathcona, North Island)

“I’m so excited to become a family doctor and carry forward the exceptional training I’ve had already in the Southern Medical Program. Growing up on the Island, it feels full circle to return home for residency.”

Maichael Thejoe

Matched to: Obstetrics and Gynecology, UBC

“I’m very happy for our whole class – there is a lot of effort that has gone into getting to this point! I’m personally super excited to be joining the OBGYN program at UBC. It’s a huge family of residents and faculty, and the program really aligns with my interests in women’s health and research. Vancouver is a fabulous city and UBC is a fabulous institution, and I’m really happy to be here.”

Hannah Galeazzi

Matched to: Family Medicine, UBC (Fort St. John)

“I am looking forward to moving up to a more northern location, living in a new city and meeting some of my co-residents! I’ve also heard they do a lot of deliveries there so I am really looking forward to that. I’m going to be buying some cross country skis this weekend so that I can do some skiing during my residency. I am really looking forward to pursuing family medicine and I think Fort St. John is going to be a really good program to provide well-rounded training.”

Kimberly Li

Matched to: Anesthesia, UBC

“I matched into Anesthesia at UBC and I’m so excited – this is a dream come true. Being an anesthesiologist will allow me to help people in the capacity that I enjoy the most.”

UBC CaRMS Match Day

Sabine Laguë

Matched to: Pediatrics, UBC

“I was born and raised in a rural area of British Columbia, and it’s been my life-long dream to give back to the people of B.C. – especially children in underserved areas. I’m very excited to work with a diverse population and an incredible community of colleagues.”

UBC CaRMS Match Day

Perneet Sekhon

Matched to: Family Medicine, UBC (Chilliwack)

“I can’t wait to go onto the next step towards becoming a family doctor – I’m ready for the challenge! I’m also very excited to be staying in B.C. and to be going to Chilliwack in the Fraser Valley – it’s going to be a great group of residents.”

UBC CaRMS Match Day

Kelly Soros

Matched to: Indigenous Family Medicine, UBC (Vancouver)

“I matched to the Indigenous Family Medicine Residency Site in Vancouver. Being an Indigenous woman and Métis, it’s very important to me to bring forward the teachings of the “Two-Eyed Seeing,” bringing together Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing with western medicine, so that I can best serve my future Indigenous clients in my career.”

UBC CaRMS Match Day

Devon Mitchell

Matched to: Emergency Medicine, UBC

“Today is the culmination of so much hard work, and matching to emergency medicine is a dream come true. I’m excited to be embarking on a new adventure and joining the emergency medicine family here in B.C. and across Canada.”

UBC CaRMS Match Day

Evgenia Todorova

Matched to: Psychiatry (Research track), UBC

“I’m from Vancouver and I’m so happy to be serving the population here. I’m really excited to be part of the research community, studying the intricacies of the brain and working towards better treatments for mental health.”

UBC CaRMS Match Day

Maxwell Moor-Smith

Matched to: Emergency Medicine, UBC (Victoria)

“I matched to Emergency Medicine in Victoria, and I’m super excited to continue my training here. I can’t wait for what the next five years have to offer.”
