Three faculty members receive the 2017 UBC Medical Alumni Association awards

Three faculty members have received the 2017 UBC Medical Alumni Association awards. The awards recognize members of the medical community for their outstanding accomplishments and commitment to the medical profession.

The three individuals from the Faculty to receive 2017 MAA awards include:

Wallace Wilson Leadership Award

Awarded annually to a graduate of the UBC Faculty of Medicine who has demonstrated high ethical standards and outstanding leadership to the profession.

Nadine Caron
Associate Professor, Department of Surgery and School of Population and Public Health
Nadine Caron graduated from the UBC medical program at the top of her class in 1997. Dr. Nadine Caron was the first indigenous woman to graduate from the program as well as Canada’s first female First Nations general surgeon. She has served on numerous committees including Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Health – Advisory Committee on Provincial Health Goals, British Columbia Medical Association – Committee on Health Promotion; Native Physicians Association of Canada; and is currently Chair of the BC Medical Association’s Committee on Aboriginal Health.

Robert Offer
Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine
Robert Offer graduated from the UBC medical program in 1969 and became the first rheumatologist to reside and practice in the BC interior. Dr. Offer’s outstanding contributions to the medical community include spearheading multidiscipline programs for arthritis, fibromyalgia and osteoporosis which served the BC interior. Dr. Offer is a clinical researcher, educator and the founding chair of the BC PharmaCare committee that advises on and adjudicates the new biologic drugs for rheumatology. As a community physician he has been recognized with a citizenship award and the school district hall of fame.

Honorary Medical Alumni Award
The Honorary Medical Alumni award recognizes a member of the UBC Faculty of Medicine community who has made a significant contribution as a committed clinician, teacher, mentor or administrator. This award is presented at the UBC Medical Alumni Association Annual General Meeting.

Shelley Ross
Shelley Ross graduated from University of Alberta’s medical program in 1974. She spent her career as a full service clinician in Canada focusing on obstetrics and women health. Currently, she is the co-chair of the General Practice Service Committee, a committee in collaboration with BCMA and the Ministry of Health in BC.In the past, Dr. Shelley Ross has served as Past President of Doctors of BC, Medical Women’s International Association and the Federation of Medical Women of Canada.

The awards will be presented at UBC’s 2017 Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony on April 26, 2017.
