eHealth Knowledge Studio opens at UBC Hospital

By Patricia Angel | January 10, 2012

The Faculty of Medicine’s eHealth Strategy Office has opened a new “high-tech hub” to bring health research and education to the people of British Columbia.

The Knowledge Studio, located in UBC Hospital, includes a video production suite that can broadcast events live through the Internet, as well as space for collaborative work, videoconferencing, and multimedia production.

Additionally, the eHealth Strategy Office is interested in partnering with all the Faculty of Medicine’s units to bring a technological capacity to projects that may not currently be available.

Given British Columbia’s large geographic area and the distributed nature of the Faculty of Medicine’s educational programs, the ability to exploit technology to disseminate health research and education is essential, and the need for more opportunities like this are growing rapidly.

“We look forward to this continuing partnership to utilize new technology for the benefit of the citizens of BC that we serve,” said Ross MacGillivray, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, at the studio’s opening Dec. 12, which was covered by OMNI news and Fairchild Television. Dr. MacGillivray described the space as a “technology petting zoo where you can come learn about the new technology, research and education… and then get this knowledge out into the community.”

The studio received financial support from the Moss Rock Park Foundation.

Led by Associate Professor and emergency physician Kendall Ho, the eHealth Strategy Office conducts research, community engagement and educational activities to explore how modern information and communication technologies can improve health care.
