Joanna Bates, Professor in the Department of Family Practice, received the President’s Award for Exemplary National Leadership for her role in improving health education, her commitment to greater access to medical training and medical care, and her mentorship of researchers in the field of education scholarship.
Dr. Bates is the founding Director of the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES). Her previous leadership roles in the Faculty of Medicine include Senior Associate Dean, Education, Senior Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education, and Associate Dean, Admissions.
The President’s Award for Exemplary National Leadership in Academic Medicine recognizes excellence for national leadership in academic medicine.
Adam Peets, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, received the Young Educators Award.
In his first four years as a faculty member, first at the University of Calgary and now at UBC, Dr. Peets has received 14 teaching awards, including ‘Best Non-Emergency Physician Teacher of the Year’ from UBC’s Emergency Medicine Training Program.
Dr. Peets’ research interests include sleep-deprivation in healthcare professionals and simulation in health care. In addition to his research on medical education, he is a member of many educational working groups in the Department of Medicine, the MD undergraduate program, and various Examination Committees at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The AFMC Young Educators Award recognizes individuals within their first seven years as a faculty member who have produced change within their university or within the medical community as a whole through their vision, work, and interaction with colleagues.
Kevin Eva, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, received the John Ruedy Award for Innovation in Medical Education.
Dr. Eva, who joined UBC in July 2010, was recognized for the creation of the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) Admission Technique. The MMI system was pioneered by a team of researchers at McMaster University, including Dr. Eva.
The John Ruedy Award is given to an individual or group who has developed innovative print materials, electronic learning aids or other teaching aids.
