The UBC Faculty of Medicine jumped 13 spots in the annual QS World University Rankings, released this week.

In the subject area of medicine, UBC is now ranked 26th in the world in this list, the third-highest in Canada behind the University of Toronto (#13) and McGill University (#22).

The QS list, one of several rankings of universities worldwide, uses the following indicators when calculating each institution’s score:

  • Academic reputation (40 per cent), based on a survey of 76,800 academics
  • Employer reputation (10 per cent), based on a survey of 44,200 employers
  • Student-to-faculty ratio (20 per cent)
  • Citations per faculty, based on the latest five years, using Scopus
  • International faculty ratio (5 per cent) and international student ratio (5 per cent)

In addition to its rising standing in the QS list, the UBC Faculty of Medicine now has the fifth-largest medical education enrolment in North America.

Another list of the world’s universities, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, ranked UBC 32nd in the clinical, pre-clinical and health category, and 20th in the life sciences.
