Dr. Steven Morgan has been appointed the Director of the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) effective January 1, 2014.
Dr. Morgan is a Professor in the School of Population and Public Health. He is also the Leader of Canada’s Pharmaceutical Policy Research Collaboration and a member of the Evidence Network of Canadian Health Policy.
An economist by training, Dr. Morgan’s research combines quantitative health services research and comparative policy analysis in the areas of health care financing, equity analysis, and pharmaceutical policy. The overarching goal of his research is to identify ways to achieve balance between three sometimes-competing goals: providing equitable access to necessary care, managing health expenditures, and promoting valued innovation.
Dr. Morgan has published over 150 articles, book chapters and reports and has been commissioned to provide policy advice to governments in Canada and abroad. He has been called to provide expert testimony before committees of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Parliament of Canada, and Senate of Canada. He has also served on expert committees of the World Health Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Dr. Morgan is a recipient of career awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, and the University of British Columbia. He is an alumnus of Commonwealth Fund’s Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice, a former Labelle Lecturer in Health Services Research, and a past President of the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research.
As Director of CHSPR, Dr. Morgan will develop and lead the research priorities of CHSPR in an effort to fulfill the Faculty’s commitment to Research Innovation & Excellence. Working with internal and external partners, he will encourage interdisciplinary research and collaboration and will promote the visibility, maintenance and growth of CHSPR in both academic and service roles.
