Hometown: Taipei, Taiwan and Burnaby, BC
Program: Midwifery
What attracted you to your field?
Being a midwife gives me the privilege of witnessing the power of labour, the loving support of families, and the strength of new lives. Caring for expectant families through this sensitive and transformative period of life is a special calling of mine. I often smile after attending a birth and say to myself, “This is why I am doing this.” It’s the warm fuzzy feeling that I get in my chest that lets me know that I am on the right path.
In 10 years, what UBC moment will you still be talking about?
Travelling to Nepal and Uganda with the UBC Midwifery Global Citizenship Program has been the highlight of my midwifery learning and a life-changing experience. Working alongside my classmates, local midwives and instructors on a busy maternity ward and witnessing the impact our team had on the ground was empowering. The bond we created through this shared experience was the best-unexpected treasure that I will always carry with me.
What’s next for you?
Looking forward to moving to Cloverdale to provide midwifery services to the community, and pursuing outdoor activities, like “forest bathing” or nature therapy!
As you look ahead, what (or who) inspires you?
Building a community where new families are supported, respected, and well cared for during their journey to parenthood is what inspires me and guides me on my career path.
Name one thing on your bucket list.
There are so many! In the immediate future, I am completing an introduction course on American Sign Language. As an immigrant myself, I would love to gain more skills to broaden my ability to care for and communicate with a wide range of people.
