Program: Master of Occupational Therapy
Class of 2017

Hometown: Victoria

Nicole.Heron_214X300What attracted you to your field of study or research?
I have interests all over the map, so sticking with and pursuing a certain field proved difficult. With my mom being an OT, the idea of occupational therapy as a potential career path had existed all my life. However, when I realized that occupational therapy combines science and art – analytical skills with creative solutions – it finally clicked. I didn’t have to choose between my inner science kid and artist. I can apply my whole self, which aligns with one of the pillars of occupational therapy: holism.

What excites you about the upcoming year?
More hands-on experience! I have my final 3 fieldwork placements, which will help me refine my interests. Now that I have a solid base of occupational therapy knowledge, I’m more confident to step into my OT shoes – an amazing feeling.

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m an avid lindy hopper. Lindy hop is a type of swing dance, which I try to do every week through lessons and social dances. I also dance blues and west coast swing. I’m currently a co-president of the UBC Swing Kids Club with a fellow OT student.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself as a professional OT working in BC, ideally on the island. I had an excellent experience during my last fieldwork placement in acute psychiatry at Lions Gate Hospital, so I’m going to venture to say I’ll end up in a mental health position. I also hope to incorporate travelling during this time, perhaps working for a year in New Zealand.

Best piece of advice: Just go for it. On placement, don’t shy away; rather, try everything. This is a time to learn.

Last vacation destination: Canada! This summer I visited family and friends in Ontario and Calgary.
