Program: MSc in Genetic Counselling
Hometown: Calgary, AB

Natasha Lemiski_450X300What have you enjoyed most about your experience with the MSc Genetic Counselling program at UBC?

I really enjoyed how this program helped me build confidence and challenge myself to go outside of my comfort zone. This was largely because of all of the support I received from my program directors, clinical supervisors, and classmates. Having an encouraging and non-competitive environment made such a difference for me.

What has surprised or challenged you?

I am continually surprised by just how much there is to learn in the field of genetic counselling. I learn something new every day, and from talking to genetic counselors who have been working in the field for several years, it sounds like this continues throughout your career.

What advice would you offer to incoming students?

The program is challenging and you’re going to be very busy. You will be amazed at how much you can learn and accomplish in just two years. That being said, it’s also a really great and memorable experience and it goes by fast, so make sure to set aside some time to have fun and enjoy it!

What’s one thing that we might be surprised to learn about you?

Before I learned about genetic counselling, I was interested in pursuing a career in graphic design or interior design. Both are still interests of mine, but I have no regrets about my career choice.

What’s next for you?

I am now working at a southern Alberta outreach clinic.
