Montana Bahen

By sarah stenabaugh | August 31, 2016

Program: Master of Occupational Therapy
Class of 2017

Hometown: Smithers, B.C.

Montana_214X300What attracted you to your field of study or research?
Occupational therapy is a field that allows you to work with people towards goals they have for themselves. As someone who loves helping others, that job description sounded just about ideal to me! My mother was an OT and she taught me that OT offers people the chance to challenge themselves, collaborate, and be creative all while working within a career of service. As a teenage girl, I definitely didn’t want to become my mother so I avoided OT for years until I realized she was exactly right and it was exactly the career I desired.

What excites you about the upcoming year?
I am excited to see the change and development in not only myself and my classmates but in the year below us as well. I can’t wait to learn more hands-on skills, get out in the field more, and challenge ourselves with our Capstone projects.

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I have lived in Northern B.C., the Shuswap, Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, and now Vancouver…so I have pretty much called every part of B.C. home at some point.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Working somewhere I love as an occupational therapist (hopefully)! And owning a dog obviously.

Best piece of advice: Try and find balance, you can’t be able to do it all perfectly…so don’t expect to. Your mental health is important too and you need to find a way to balance it all out.

Last vacation destination: Ocean fishing off the west coast of Vancouver Island for five days.
