Hometown: Delta, BC
Program: Master of Physical Therapy
Year in Program: 2

What inspired you to pursue your program?

I knew I wanted to work in healthcare but wasn’t sure what field was best for me. I researched and shadowed about ten different disciplines, everything from physical therapy to pharmacy to genetic counselling.

At the time, I was volunteering at a hospital keeping patients company during long hospital stays. During this time, I was able to see a physical therapist train a student in various clinical techniques like manual assisted coughing, suctioning, and a range of motion exercises to prevent muscle stiffening. I was grateful for the opportunity and inspired to learn more, so I began volunteering at the PARC gym at iCORD helping people with spinal cord injury exercise.

I realized that, for me, physical therapy was the ideal blend of science, art, and passion for movement. It is a natural fit and I am so happy I pursued it.

What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?

Becoming a practicing therapist! I have one more placement to complete and it’s in an orthopedics and sports medicine clinic. Following that, I look forward to diving into clinical practice. We’ve been building up a large toolbox of skills over the past two years and I am excited to put those skills to work.

Best piece of advice

From a dear mentor, “Focus on what you are learning – not the grades you are earning. In the end, your skills will speak for themselves.”

First job

Working at a bike rental shop in Whistler. Great way to spend a summer!

What’s next on your BC bucket list?

Ah, the list is long but up next is hiking the West Coast Trail this fall.
