Kelsey Kerr

By sarah stenabaugh | August 31, 2016

Program: MSc in Speech-Language Pathology
Class of 2018

Hometown: Port Moody, B.C.

Kelsey.Kerr_214X300What attracted you to your field of study or research?
Before finding the field of speech-language pathology, I had been working for years with children and young adults with various disabilities. My favourite part was always trying to find a way to understand their own ways of communicating and to also find new ways for them to communicate. Once I found SLP and began to learn more about the different tools that are out there to give people their voice, my love affair with alternative communication really took off!

What excites you about the upcoming year?
I am most excited about learning the practical skills and the clinical experiences.

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
Kelsey Grammar is my namesake. “Cheers” was my mother’s favourite television show while she was pregnant with me. I have never seen an episode.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Working in a smaller community in B.C. as a speech-language pathologist focusing on alternative and argumentative communication, while exploring the outdoors in my spare time.

Best piece of advice: “Be a solution finder, not a problem solver.”

Last vacation destination: Mara Lake, B.C. A great little lake near the Shuswap and surrounded by lush green mountains.
