Hometown: Tanzania
Program: Master of Public Health

What attracted you to your field?

I grew up in the rural coastal areas of Tanzania with a passion towards advocating for the underprivileged communities in gaining healthcare services. The public health field has been central in improving health care services through innovative models, preventative measures, and pioneering research to understand the multifaceted nature of healthcare.

What is your favourite moment from your time at UBC?

I enjoyed the performing and fine arts at the UBC Arts and Culture District, including a concert by one of my favorite artists, Dianne Reeves, in early 2020. I also had the privilege to work with SEEDS (Social Ecological Economic Development Studies) Sustainability Program and was astounded by the brilliant projects of UBC students and further appreciated our institutional strategies and frameworks.

What is one piece of advice you have for students entering your program?

Connect with the staff, faculty, and your peers, who you will find have a lot of experience, expertise, and key relationships in different fields. Determine what skills and experience is required in your career of interest, so you can get the best out of the program. Plan early in your coursework, internships, and post-graduate. Explore opportunities and activities outside your academics that the university offers such as sports, performing arts, clubs, and community service.

What’s next for you?

I recently joined the Population Health Observatory at Fraser Health Authority, providing data management expertise and analytical support for health assessment and disease surveillance.
