Jazzmin Tavares

By sarah stenabaugh | August 31, 2016

Program: Master of Occupational Therapy
Class of 2018

Hometown: Kelowna

Jazzmin.Tavares_214X300What attracted you to your field of study or research?
I was always interested in the field of occupational therapy because my father has been treated by many OTs due to his brain injury. I was always intrigued by OT but I wasn’t quite sure what the day-to-day life of an OT looked like. During my undergrad, I completed a practicum working with adults with brain injuries alongside an OT and within the first day of my practicum, I knew that a career in OT was for me! I always knew a career within the medical field was the direction I would take but OT is definitely the perfect balance of art and science. I love that each and every day will be a little different than the next and that I will never stop learning!

What excites you about the upcoming year?
I am very excited to start a new chapter of my life with so many new experiences to come! I am excited to meet all of my classmates, faculty members, and more current OTs. I think that I am most excited about learning all the various sides of OT, working with new populations, and gaining more knowledge.

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
You might be surprised to know that I am a little bit of a thrill seeker and I am constantly finding new adventures. I have had the pleasure of completing many solo skydiving jumps, helicopter rides, zip-lining and rappelling. I enjoy travelling and have recently visited the beautiful country of Thailand while volunteering at an animal rescue centre, with my main focus being elephant care.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I see myself back in Kelowna working as an OT at Kelowna General Hospital. I hope to further my knowledge in all fields of OT while working at KGH before narrowing down my field of focus.

Best piece of advice: Treat others the way you would like to be treated and always keep an open mind. Always try to be the person that your dog already thinks you are.

Last vacation destination: The last vacation destination I visited was Cancun, Mexico!
