Chelsea.Henitiuk_214X300What attracted you to your field of study or research?
Coming from a background in the injury-prone sport of freestyle mogul skiing, regularly seeing a physiotherapist was a part of my routine for many years! I came to recognize how vital this profession was to keeping me on my skis and performing at my best. Pursuing physiotherapy seemed like a natural choice for me when I came to UBC. I love that I will get to work with people and utilize my many years of experience as an athlete.

What excites you about the upcoming year?
I just finished a B.A in Psychology at UBC, so I am excited to join a smaller cohort of students in the MPT program and feel like I am on a team again! Also, I am so excited to finally start learning about this field that I am so interested in and getting some hands-on experience!

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I was a member of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team for a decade before coming to UBC. I competed for Canada in the first ever World Championships for Halfpipe Skiing. Following that, I worked my way up to compete for four seasons on the World Cup circuit in Mogul Skiing. My top result was 4th place at the 2012 Canadian World Cup at Mont Gabriel, QC.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself starting a family and working in the sea to sky region. I hope to continue taking courses so that I am always advancing my skills as a physiotherapist. As to what area of the field I will be working in… I am trying to keep an open mind as I enter the program!

Best piece of advice: I have been working towards various big goals most of my life. Whether it be in sport or school, both can be stressful! Make a plan, and take it one step at a time. If you are thinking about the end result too much, it can be overwhelming. Try to stay in the present and enjoy the process!

Last vacation destination: The last vacation I was on was this past June. My boyfriend and I travelled to London, Ireland, Amsterdam and Scotland. We attended my friend’s wedding in Scotland – it was beautiful!
