Back to School

This fall, learners from across a wide range of programs in the Faculty of Medicine will start a new academic year.

Meet our Students

Alireza Kamyabi

By sarah stenabaugh | August 16, 2018

Hometown: Vancouver
Program: Master’s in Neuroscience
Year in Program: 1

What inspired you to pursue your program?

There are many factors that motivated me to pursue a master’s in neuroscience, but the most significant one for me was the challenge of describing and understanding how the nervous system functions. The brain is one of the least understood organs in the body and also one of the most interesting ones to study. It’s often described as the last frontier of science, so it’s exciting to take part in discovering how our nervous system works.

What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?

I’m looking forward to delving into my project and seeing where it leads me. The project I’m working on is quite interesting and I’m excited to see what results it will bring.

Best piece of advice

Don’t hesitate to question things. I think we often get used to the way things are and become wary of asking why. This is true for both science and society I think – the things that we take for granted are also often the most interesting things to question. The results might be surprising. So question everything.

First job

My first job was at a local grocery store. I was helping with moving stocks and boxes. There was lots of heavy lifting but I enjoyed it.

What’s next on your BC bucket list?

Hiking the full length of the Baden-Powell Trail.
