Dr. Sonja Rummell

By Alex Tsui | January 31, 2024

Program: Geriatric Medicine
Location: Vancouver-Fraser
Year in Program: 5

What does the Faculty’s vision Transforming Health for Everyone mean to you as a resident doctor?

As a geriatric medicine resident doctor, I recognize that we have reached a point in our healthcare system where we must make sweeping changes to better support the health of our aging population. As our population ages, our healthcare system will need to develop more comprehensive strategies to support older adults functionally, including better home supports and system navigation tools. A culturally-sensitive approach will be crucial to support the diverse older adult population in Canada.

What’s your favourite part about training in the community you’re in?

After travelling around the globe, I can confidently say that Vancouver is one of the best places in the world. The amazing natural setting, great restaurants, mild climate and trails at my doorstep are second-to-none. However, my favourite part of living in Vancouver is that I grew up here, so I am surrounded by a “village” of family members and friends who have supported me in becoming a parent during my medical training.
