Dr. Jenna Black

By Alex Tsui | January 31, 2024

Program: Psychiatry
Location: Victoria
Year in Program: 1

What does the Faculty’s vision Transforming Health for Everyone mean to you as a resident doctor?

To me, this transformation starts with recognizing the history of medicine and how inequalities in access, health outcomes and patient experience are still present today. This transformation should recognize the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of patients and communities. To include everyone in this transformation, we must recognize that each patient has a different background, experiences and needs. As an individual resident in psychiatry, I try to actively support this vision by challenging my biases, advocating for my patients, practicing trauma-informed care and working towards rebuilding trust.

What’s your favourite part about training in the community you’re in?

I moved from Ontario to Victoria last summer to begin residency. Although I have only been here a short time, I have had so many adventures and new experiences. This is thanks to the people I have met here who inspire and encourage me to get out of my comfort zone and to embrace the incredible natural environment I have found myself in. I feel as though I have barely scratched the surface of what this area has to offer and I cannot wait to discover more about myself and this land as I complete my training in Victoria.
